Part one of this two part series covers the definition, demographics, etiology, signs and symptoms, treatment options, and role of massage for depression and anxiety disorders.

Meet Your Instructor

  • Ruth Werner, BCTMB

    Ruth Werner is Board Certified in Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork (BCTMB), and a member of the American Massage Therapy Association, the International Fascia Research Society, and the Alliance for Massage Therapy Education. She has written numerous articles for massage trade journals and several books on subjects ranging from ethics to pharmacology. Ruth Werner is the author of the textbook, A Massage Therapist's Guide to Pathology, and writes a column for Massage and Bodywork Magazine called Pathology Perspectives.

  1. Anxiety Disorders

    1. Anxiety Disorders

    In the first chapter of this course, Ruth Werner defines anxiety disorders and identifies groups that are most at risk for anxiety disorders. This chapter explores three contributing factors that contribute to anxiety disorders and compares arousal, fear and anxiety. The participant will study six specific types of anxiety disorders, including basic signs, symptoms, and triggers where applicable. Werner explains how to predict the risks of working with a client that has an anxiety disorder and the benefits of massage therapy of such a client.

  2. Bipolar Disorders

    2. Bipolar Disorders

    This chapter defines bipolar disorder, identifies common synonyms for bipolar disorder, and describes the mood arc from depression to mania. Ruth Werner explores the five types of bipolar disorder (with special emphasis on type one), lists common bipolar disorder signs and symptoms, and describes typical bipolar disorder treatment options. The participant will learn to predict the risks of working when a client has bipolar disorder, define the benefits of massage therapy for such a client and define sensible accommodations.

Completion Requirements

If approved for CE credit in your discipline and state, a minimum score of 70% is required for OT/OTA, Nurse, LTCA, and RT. A minimum score of 80% is required for SW. No minimum score is required for other disciplines unless otherwise specified within the course.
